About Flagler County

Flagler County Florida was created in 1917 from parts of St. John's County and Volusia County.  Named for the railroad tycoon Henry Flagler, who created the transportation system to bring people from the Northeast to the beaches of Florida during the cold weather days up north.

Many Communities have existed in this county during Flagler's inception to include:
Bulow Plantation - an antibellum plantation known for growing indigo, cotton, rice, and sugar cane - the ruins of which are visited today.
Cherokee Grove
(also known as Princess Place)- a historic site in Palm Coast, which was owned by
Henry Cutting in 1886.  Upon his death, his wife married a Russian prince - which was the catalyst in the name change.
Ocean City - formed in 1913 as a beach vacation area in the heart of what is now Flagler Beach - established one of the first housing communities recorded in Flagler County.
Marineland - Built in 1938, was the world's first oceanarium.  Known for its marine mammal shows, it eventually fell victim to the times of Sea World and Busch Gardens - This location still features a swim with the dolphins and is a study facility under the Whitney Laboratory and the University of Florida.
